Effects of DDE in Metabolic Improvement After Weight Loss: Bariatric Surgery Study Design
The prevalence of obesity has risen during the past four decades in children and adults. Lipophilic persistent organic pollutants (POPs), such as DDE and DDT, accumulate in adipose tissue (AT) and can disrupt metabolic systems. We therefore propose a novel translational study design for investigating causal mechanisms of DDE metabolic effects in humans, leveraging the remarkable archive of clinical data and visceral AT from the Teen-Longitudinal Assessment of Bariatric Surgery (Teen-LABS) study and an in vitro human adipocyte experimental model.
